43 new homes are set to be developed at a former residential care home site in the leafy Birmingham suburb of Edgbaston by local housebuilder Spitfire.
Following the unanimous planning approval of Birmingham City Council, granted at the end of 2020, the Solihull/Midlands-based firm will develop the 3.1 acre site into a range of dwellings likely to attract young professionals, down-sizers, couples and families.
Spitfire acquired the land, which is the former site of Weston House care home, from Calthorpe Estates.
Ben Leather, managing director at Spitfire, said: “This is a distinctive project located in a prestigious part of Birmingham and is a prime example of what Spitfire stands for. We have established a reputation for creating quality homes in desirable locations and this collection offers exactly that.
“The acquisition of this site forms part of our wider land strategy – as a business we are actively seeking more land opportunities across the Midlands in an effort to increase our reach and offer our unique homes to a wider market.”
The project for the Norfolk Road site, situated 3.5 miles from Birmingham City Centre, has been designed by fellow local firm Glancy Nicholls, and will feature 26 newbuild apartments and nine substantial houses.
Weston House itself will also undergo refurbishment as part of the project, transforming the 19th century building into a series of grand apartments, whilst the adjacent coach house will become two smaller, semi-detached properties.
Spitfire has also recently completed the purchase of land at a site in Eckington, Worcestershire, with plans afoot to acquire more sites in the coming months.
Haydn Cooper, chief executive of Calthorpe Estates, said: “With Weston House we were looking for a developer with a reputation for delivering high-quality residential schemes – Spitfire fits that bill.
“We are committed to creating thriving communities and enhancing Edgbaston.
“Regenerating the Norfolk Road site, along with the establishment of Edgbaston Village as a vibrant leisure and lifestyle destination, plus the arrival of the Metro and SPRINT, all strengthen Edgbaston as an attractive location for people to live, work and relax.”
